Wellness Corner 46: Character Invention
Hey Falcons,
We’re in the home stretch — just one last push! Something interesting to help you during the stress of exams is a technique called Character Invention or the ‘Batman Effect.’ Character Invention is rooted in science, no matter how silly it might seem, so humor me. After all, if Beyoncé and Kobe Bryant can do it, you can too.
Creating ‘idealized’ characters for yourself gives a clear and specific mentality and approach. This helps you to combat self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and even lethargy.
To find your characters:
Identify the situations where you'd like to show up as the best version of yourself. For example, an AP history exam.
Envision your character’s traits, way of interacting, energy level, and emotional state.
Turn into this character as a trial run. Following the example , take a practice AP exam in character.
Three characters that I’ve created for myself and have balanced this exam season are:
The Machine: built on drive, focus, and grit, it’s perfect for exam season
The Creative: imaginative, free-spirited, and confident, perfect for all creative endeavors
The Son and Friend: present, emotionally and physically, for all.
Let’s try out the Character Invention Technique and see if it works for us! Wishing you all a very successful exam season. We got this!
Stay well,
Eshaan
