Wellness Corner 15: Anxiety
Hey Falcons,
The fight-or-flight response is your body’s reaction to things perceived as threats. This type of anxiety is normal and can be expected to hit during certain events; it lasts for brief periods of time. However, individuals with anxiety disorders (which need to be medically diagnosed) often experience these intense emotions for prolonged periods of time.
Given that AP exams and finals are coming up, we students might experience increased anxiety and stress. And whether you’re referring to the short bouts of stress you get or the prolonged disorders, anxiety isn’t fun. Try these tips to manage anxiety as we approach exam season.
Exercise can decrease stress hormones and help you feel better. Try taking a walk or stepping outside (being outside can release serotonin, a neurotransmitter that boosts mood) before an exam or during study breaks.
Avoid processed food; refined sugars and other components of processed foods can contribute to an increased likelihood of anxiety and depression. During exam season (and all the time in your life, but baby steps first) try sticking to whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and fish.
Meditation and mindfulness can help manage anxiety. Check out the mindfulness page of WellBase to learn more.
When stressed, your body needs additional sleep and rest. It's important to get 8 hours of sleep per night!
Take deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly throughout the day when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed.
Slowly count to 10 or 20; repeat as many times as necessary.
Hope these tips help y’all out!
