Wellness Corner 20: Music

Who doesn’t love listening to music? It turns out that music can actually be used in a positive way to help us deal with our emotions.

Finnish researchers recently found that using music as a release—a strategy they call Discharge—is potentially maladaptive (bad). One of the healthier strategies is what they identify as Diversion, using music to replace a negative feeling with a more positive one. Another study found the use of music to find comfort by feeling empathy with another person’s pain. And the term they use to define this strategy is Solace.

And another mindful activity you can do with music is close your eyes, focus on beats, notes, or even lyrics you like, pinning down exactly what it is you like about the elements, and appreciating it. Try it out with the WellBase playlist here: https://www.wellbase.kinkaid.org/mindfulness.

Stay well,
Eshaan
