Wellness Corner 3: Proprioceptive Writing
In this week’s Wellness Corner, I have a cool topic for you - proprioceptive writing. I learned about it this past weekend at this workshop, and I thought I’d share a bit about it with you.
Proprioceptive writing is a practice where you write what you hear and listen to what you write. All you need is some music, a pen, and paper. You write for a period of 15 minutes, beginning with a simple observation about the world around you (most often it’s about the music you’re listening to, but it can be about any sounds, like birdsong, the tapping of rain on the roof, the sound of the AC, etc.). As you write, ask yourself ‘What do I mean by ___?’ Don't worry about whether what you’re writing is good or not, as proprioceptive writing isn’t intended for an audience. It’s intended for you. Here’s a tip sheet for proprioceptive writing with a great example.
Whether for reflective purposes, to build a character for a story you’re writing, to work through emotional stress, or just for fun, proprioceptive writing is a really unique concept to explore. I encourage all of you to try this technique out — you’ll be left feeling warmer inside: calmer yet energized.
Stay well,
Eshaan
