Wellness Corner 5: Mindfulness

The topic of this week’s Wellness Corner is mindfulness! Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present through careful control of one’s body and mind. It’s perhaps the most talked-about facet of wellness. In some classes at Kinkaid, mindfulness is integrated as a part of class, like English II with Ms. Forster or Decisions for Healthy Living with Ms. Mitchell and Mrs. Haynes. Mindfulness is essentially meditation, and the goal is solely to be aware. There’s no improvement involved. Spend any amount of time from 1 to 10 minutes focusing (and attempting to stay focused) on your breathing, the way your feet feel against the floor, the way the air feels against your skin, and other simple — some would even call them mundane — elements of existence. It’s a fascinating practice, as we discover more about ourselves… It almost becomes a game!
