Wellness Corner 43: Seven Types of Rest
Hey Falcons,
Rested is something we high schoolers rarely are. And there are times after you get 8 hours of sleep when you still feel exhausted. While you physically rest when sleeping, there are actually six other types of rest required to prevent burnout.
Mental Rest
Meditate/Pray. Write down your to-do's. Create a winding-down ritual each night to separate school and life
Social Rest
Spend more time with people who give you energy, and less with “energy vampires” who steal your energy. Also, block out time to be alone.
Spiritual Rest
Be a part of something bigger than yourself. A way to do this is to volunteer…maybe even through WellBase ;)
Sensory Rest
Limit screen time. Take a break from social media and turn off notifications. Try placing your phone in a different room. Set a relaxing ambiance (calming music, altered lighting, etc.).
Emotional Rest
Emotional rest deficit occurs when you feel like you can't be authentic. Spend time with people you feel you can be “real” with.
Creative Rest
Appreciate beauty, art, and all that springs from creativity. Go for a walk in nature and take in a sunrise or sunset. Visit a museum or art festival (yay, ISAS!), or listen to your favorite music, read your favorite books, etc.
There they are! The seven types of rest. My personal favorites are the three S’s: sensory, social and spiritual rest. Let’s try our best to incorporate each of these types of rest into our lives. Best of luck for the coming week; we got this!
Stay well,
Eshaan
